A safe and effective corrosion inhibitor for use in metalworking fluids
What is Versatic acid 10 (VA10)?
VA10, a chemical intermediate produced by Hexion Inc. is a highly branched C10 tertiary carboxylic acid (also known as neodecanoic acid). It is used to produce metallic salts and other derivatives, which are used in many applications.
An important market application is in metalworking fluids, where salts of the VA10 can act as corrosion inhibitors. VA10 serves as a viable substitute for isononanoic acid, sebacic acid, azelaic acid and 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA).
VA10 has a more favourable HS&E profile compared to 2-EHA. VA10 is not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic (CMR), whereas 2-EHA is currently classified as Reprotoxic Category 1B.
Hazardous reclassification of 2‑ethylhexanoic acid and its salts
Recently, 2‑ethylhexanoic acid and most of its salts have been reclassified as Reprotoxic Category 1B by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), effective from November 2023.
Possible consequences for users of these reclassified substances include reclassification of derived products, loss of certification, and prohibition of use.
Versatic Acid 10 as an alternative to 2‑ethylhexanoic acid
Versatic Acid 10 (VA10) is:
- already a commercially available alternative to 2-ethylhexanoic acid in a broad series of applications
- not classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic (CMR)
- a high performing solution for your metalworking formulation
- a synthetic, highly branched, tertiary carboxylic acid. VA10 exhibits excellent ferrous corrosion inhibition properties when formulated as an amino acid in semi synthetic and synthetic metalworking fluids. In addition, it offers superior corrosion protection compared to alternative long chain dicarboxylic acids.
- a products that offers superior corrosion protection compared to sebacic and azelaic dicarboxylic acid when formulated as e.g. the monoethanolamine/triethanolamine salt.
Easy Handling
Versatic Acid 10 is an easy-to-handle clear liquid. The product is readily soluble when added to the liquid amino acid. In contract to some solid acids or mixtures of acids, there is no need for heating to achieve good dissolution.
